MCYYZ XXI: Beyond Borders

Business is incestuous by nature. The rise of national capitalism only proves this point. Chinese princes and Russian officials grow rich off of their countries investments. Merits beyond surnames are of little value in such crooked social systems.

The rich hoard all the wealth, and the poor must pool what’s left. As the counter-culture we’ve collected our resources and offered them up for free. Friends of ours like Info the Astronaut, Just-In-Rhymes, and David Versis have all brought free music our way. Below is a link to the latter, and I suggest you give it a listen. However, my message today is to go beyond borders, so let me now traverse outside my own.

Until recently I despised the work of Rick Ross. Though I never made it my mission to attack him publicly, I found no joy in listening to him privately. That is until Drizzy gave him the co-sign on Aston Martin Music. Yet a single was far from an album, and further still from a career. With the release of his latest mixtape he’s now provided me with a step in the right direction. Already one of the most downloaded mixtapes in history, “Rich Forever” is packed with great beats and classic features. More importantly it see’s Ricky Rozay delivering track after track. I never thought I’d like any Miami rap outside of Slip-N-Slide records, but these Maybach Music boys are definitely coming correct these days.

Dreamland is not your only source for Toronto rap music, and I am far from the only blogger posting about the same. The worldwide web epitomizes selection, but when it comes to that northern touch hiphopcanada.com is amongst the elite. Their coverage is thorough and spans from Nova Scotia to Vancouver island. With an eclectic staff of well versed writers there is certainly something for every urban ear. That said, I enjoy the work of Toronto based writer Jonathon “Bizz” Brown the most. As the founder of “It Lives in the North,” Brown embodies everything Toronto. His work ethic is admirable, and his write-ups enjoyable. Be sure to check out his hustles.

A Torontonian blessed to enjoy this cityscape as a member of its advertising community. Out of the office I'm just a kid with a keyboard trying to make a name for myself on the triple-W. Twitter: @mrletmeknow

Nice piece brotha. I am however, completely shocked about the Rick Ross co-sign. Speechless even. Never thought I’d see the day. He’s definitely one of the strongest brands in rap right now. Great work though and I like the hometown integration. My favorite series by you lives on!

What can I say, that mixtape is extremely well made. I will definitely be on the look out for God Forgives, I Don’t now.
